Toronto City Council is expected to vote this month on a staff report recommending the city explore “thermal” waste treatment, otherwise known as garbage incineration. The report is based on a study of “mixed waste processing,” to assess whether developing a facility to retrieve recyclable and organic waste from the regular garbage stream would be feasible as part of a strategy to extend the life of the city’s Green Lane landfill from 2029 to 2040. The report, adopted by the Infrastructure and Environment Committee last March, found that mixed waste processing alone would only extend the life of the dump for less than one year.
