The province has secured a commitment from the owner and operator of Oakville’s Glen Abbey Golf Club to withdraw its plans to redevelop the property into a mixed-use neighbourhood after years of sustained public and political opposition to the proposed project. While local residents are celebrating the decision, an urban policy consultant says that the outcome is at odds with the province’s pro-development stance, and could deter other golf course owners across the region from harnessing properties of this size to develop a more complete and public range of uses, including housing and parkland.
