The province has approved a request from the City of Burlington to allow the adjustment of the location of its urban growth centre from the city’s downtown to its GO train corridor, in a decision the mayor says will protect Burlington’s downtown from overdevelopment and will support transit-oriented growth along the GO corridor. But there are concerns from members of the development industry that the decision will negatively impact the construction of new residential supply in Burlington during a housing crisis, while potentially setting a precedent for other municipalities in the region to contemplate adjusting the locations of their urban growth centres.
