Amid construction delays and cost overruns, the $868-million light rail transit project in Waterloo is expected to be operational in spring 2019.

The Region of Waterloo is testing and commissioning the 14 light rail transit vehicles that will be used for the ION rapid transit system. Originally slated to be complete by July 2017, the 19-kilometre rapid transit project has experienced significant project delays, which pushed the project back two years and added an extra $50-million onto the total project costs. These delays were the result of production issues at Bombardier, archaeological discoveries, utility relocations and unexpected infrastructure upgrades.
