Municipalities across the GTHA dedicated much of 2018 to crafting and implementing planning frameworks designed to tackle the challenges of urban sprawl. Guided by the principles set out in the provincial Growth Plan, a number of municipal councils approved higher density buildings along transit corridors, enhanced stormwater infrastructure, approved secondary plans for urban growth centres and improved cycling and transportation networks. These initiatives moved forward while municipal and regional staff were trying to navigate the new local planning appeal tribunal, tackle an affordable housing crisis and fight the impacts of climate change.
