A draft community benefits framework could be part of the solution to Parkdale’s affordable housing crisis.

The Parkdale Community Benefits Framework is intended to shape development in a way that protects the residents and the character of the neighbourhood. It includes 10 demands that all developers provide and protect affordable units and maintain rents increases at the rent control guidelines of 1.8 per cent. An attempt to more than double rents in a Parkdale apartment building in early 2018 led to a two month rent strike by tenants before the landlord backed down.
