With three noteworthy mayoral races in York Region and two former Liberal MPPs vying for the regional chair position, the region could see substantive change this municipal election.

Incumbent mayors in Aurora and Whitchurch-Stouffville will have some fierce competition this election, squaring off against candidates with political experience and name recognition. Aurora mayor Geoffrey Dawe, first elected mayor in 2010, is running for re-election against deputy mayor John Abel and fellow councillor Tom Mrakas.
