After a troubled one-year pilot project, Burlington council is poised to discontinue the controversial New Street bike lanes.

In July 2016, council approved the 2km, $210,000 New Street bike lane pilot project, which reconfigured the street between Guelph and Walkers lines from four lanes of vehicular traffic to two lanes of traffic with a two-way left-turn lane, and two painted bike lanes. The one-year pilot project was officially launched August 23, 2016.
