Amy Lazar, Municipal Reporter

Amy Lazar is the municipal affairs reporter for Novæ Res Urbis. A graduate of Carleton and Ryerson Universities, she has written for a variety of magazines and newspapers. Amy spent some time in New York City working for Time magazine and then returned to the GTA to venture into the world of newspaper journalism.

After a short stint at her hometown paper in Richmond Hill, she joined the Simcoe County newsrooms of the Barrie Examiner and the Orillia Packet and Times as a general assignment reporter. While she was there, Amy interviewed the then soon-to-be Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canada’s prized author Margaret Atwood and former OPP Commissioner Gwen Boniface. She also travelled to the Philippines with a group of missionaries, who had fundraised to build an addition onto an orphanage, and the series of articles was nominated for an Ontario Newspaper Award. From there, she moved to the St. Catharines Standard, a bigger city with a larger circulation and worked on the education beat. Over the years, she has become familiar with the Greenbelt legislation, the Oak Ridges moraine and the Niagara escarpment—just a few topics of interest to NRU readers.

As she delves into the world of planning, development and the politics around it, Amy hopes to shed new light on municipal issues with thought-provoking and analytical articles. Amy is also a two-time triathlete, an avid reader and a huge fan of the vanilla non-fat latte.
